Vietnamese children await transport during Operation Babylift in 1975, the historic humanitarian mission that evacuated thousands of orphans from South Vietnam as the Vietnam War came to an end. LeAnn Thieman, who participated in the effort as a volunteer nurse, will share her firsthand experiences during presentations at DMACC October 26 and 27.

DMACC's War and the Human Experience Speaker Series will welcome bestselling author and Iowa native LeAnn Thieman for a special presentation about her role in Operation Babylift, one of the largest humanitarian rescue efforts of the Vietnam War era.

As the Vietnam War came to a close in 1975, concerns grew about the safety of thousands of Vietnamese orphans, including many fathered by U.S. servicemembers. In response, President Gerald Ford authorized Operation Babylift, a massive effort that airlifted children from South Vietnam to safety.

Thieman, an Iowa farm girl and nurse at the time, became part of the historic mission. During her presentation, she will share firsthand accounts of the rescue effort and the lasting impact the experience had on her life.

Thieman's appearance is part of DMACC's International Year of Vietnam programming and offers students, employees and community members an opportunity to hear a personal perspective on a significant moment in history.

Following each presentation, Thieman will sign and distribute free copies of her book, This Must Be My Brother, to DMACC students and employees. Faculty members are encouraged to bring their classes to attend.
